Beethoven isn’t remembered for his sunny optimism, but his Symphony No. 4 is bright and joyful, with Berlioz describing the beautiful slow movement as though it “seems to have been breathed by the archangel Michael.” Cellist Zlatomir Fung, gold medalist at the International Tchaikovsky Competition, performs Tchaikovsky’s showstopping Rococo Variations and Fauré’s tender and hauntingly beautiful Élégie. The evening begins with Kodály’s Dances of Galánta, filled with lush, dramatic melodies of the Romani people.
